How it is calculated
- If you enter an APY, the balance grows by (1 + APY) to the power of months / 12. The compounding frequency does not matter, because APY already includes it.
- If you enter an APR compounded n times a year, the balance grows by (1 + APR / n) to the power of n x months / 12. Part periods are allowed, which is a simplification: a bank credits interest only on its own schedule.
- APY from APR = (1 + APR / n)n - 1. Regulation DD defines APY from interest, principal and the days in the term, and this is the same result for whole compounding periods.
- The early-withdrawal penalty is the number of months you enter, charged as interest at the CD's own rate on the deposit. Banks write their own penalty rules, so use the figure from your disclosure.

CD questions
How much interest does $10,000 earn in a 12-month CD?
At 1.76% APY, $10,000 earns $176.00 over 12 months and ends at $10,176.00. Change the deposit, rate or term above to see your own figure.
What is the difference between APR and APY on a CD?
APR is the nominal yearly rate before compounding. APY is the effective yield after compounding, so it is the number to compare between CDs. 1.76% as an APR compounded monthly is a 1.774% APY, and the more often interest compounds, the bigger the gap.
How is the early-withdrawal penalty calculated?
Banks set their own penalty, commonly a number of months of interest. This calculator takes the months you enter and charges that many months of interest at the CD's rate on the deposit. With 3 months it is $43.71 here. Your bank's disclosure decides the real amount, including whether it can reach your principal.
What was the national average CD rate?
The FDIC national rate for 12-month CDs was 1.76% in the table dated Oct 19, 2026. It averages the $10,000 and $100,000 tiers across institutions and is a benchmark, not an offer.
